Attention digital printers in NSW … help GASAA try to lower your Workers Comp insurance premium!!!
The Graphic Arts Services Association of Australia has asked WorkCover NSW to consider a lower insurance premium rate for firms with significant digital print capabilities. GASAA has submitted that the nature of digital printing is less risk adverse than WorkCover might expect. For changes to occur however, WorkCover NSW needs to profile the digital print sector, and gain an understanding of the claims experience of the group. While WorkCover can review its records of NSW printers, it needs industry assistance to identify those firms that are solely, or mainly digital printers. Accordingly we’d like your help in completing the quick questionnaire below and authorising WorkCover to include your firms’ claims experience in its overall review. This is not an assessment of individual policies, but an aggregate look at the digital print sector. WorkCover needs a sizeable pool of digital printers to participate in this review, so please do not leave this to others. Congratulations Melissa Djukic receiver of Glen Crerar Scholarship 2007. We interviewed the applicants for the Glen Crerar Scholarship and by unanimous decision Melissa Djukic was chosen as the receiver of the grant for this year. Melissa has completed a TAFE apprentiship course at Ultimo TAFE and works for a medium size printing company called Awesome Screen Prints. Her immediate boss is Paul Smith who also won the scholarship some years back. Melissa would like to go to FESPA to learn as much as she can about the production side of print and to look at what are the advances are being made in equipment, innovative work practices and products that are new to the industry. Although the company she works for is a general jobbing print shop her flair is towards textile yardage printing. Her aim is to stay within thee screen printing industry and some time down the track to run her own business but not withstanding the contacts and networking she has formed in her present position. Melissa is hands on and can even hand cut stencils. |

New anti-dumping officer to help SME's The Australian Customs Service has appointed an officer to exclusively help and advise small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on all anti-dumping/countervailing related matters. The newly appointed officer will offer SMEs advice on lodging applications for new measures; reviews of existing anti-dumping measures; continuation of measures; duty assessments; and will also respond to anti-dumping enquiries. Printing Industries National Policy and Research Manager, Hagop Tchamkertenian, welcomed the appointment of an officer dedicated to SMEs and suggests contacting Printing Industries first. Dumping is when goods are exported to Australia at a price that is below the "normal value" (usually domestic price) of the goods. While dumping is not a prohibited practise under international trade agreements, remedial action can be taken when dumping causes or threatens to cause material injury to an Australian industry. |

Patrick Smith from Alupanel Australia supplied this a slight miss calculation. Not really funny but very interesting. ENGINEERING CALCULATION Problem: A backhoe weighing 8 tons is on top of a flatbed trailer heading east on Interstate 70 near Hays, Kansas. The extended shovel arm is made of hardened refined steel and the approaching overpass is made of commercial-grade concrete, reinforced with 1 1/2 inch steel rebar spaced at 6 inch intervals in a criss-cross pattern layered with 1 foot vertical spacing. Solve: When the shovel arm hits the overpass, how fast does the trailer with the backhoe have to be going to slice the bridge in half? (Assume no headwind and no braking by the driver who is oblivious of the situation Extra Credit: Solve for the time and distance required for the entire rig to come to a complete stop after hitting the overpass at the speed calculated above. Answer - It doesn't really matter... The point is that the trucking company just bought themselves a bridge |
