Super changes to come into force soon
Changes to super from 1 July 2008 may affect the way some employers calculate the super guarantee contributions they make on behalf of their employees.
From July employers must use ‘ordinary time earnings’ to calculate employees’ super guarantee contributions. Ordinary time earnings, as defined in the super guarantee law, is generally what an employee earns for ordinary hours of work. It includes over-award payments, shift loading or commissions but excludes such things as overtime.
Most employers are already using ordinary time earnings to calculate super guarantee. Some employers however, are using other methods, such as earnings outlined in industrial awards or existing employment agreements. The changes will ensure all employees are treated the same for super guarantee purposes.
Tax Office Deputy Commissioner Neil Olesen said the Tax Office wants to make sure employers are ready for the changes. To help employers prepare for the changes a fact sheet Checklist for salary or wages and ordinary time earnings is now available on the Tax Office website www.ato.gov.au .

DISPLAY POWER

"We strive to make you look good"

30 Dell Road, West Gosford, Australia,
www.displaypower.com.au
Phone: (02)4322 0400  Fax: (02)4322 0500
Display Power is approaching its tenth year of business in May 2008. Coming from a start-up company to be a specialist supplier and installer of digital retail and corporate graphics and sign elements nationally.

Display Power was conceived by John and Susan Knight having just sold their group of 3 digital print retail shops, Display Power was intended to keep them both occupied until retirement. Little did they know what was ahead!

John had also spent years in the hospitality industry where customer service is critical to success. As a result he brought the same service focus to the world of digital printing. As John says “Customer service and satisfaction are imbedded into our culture, our team will always go the extra mile to ensure our customers deadlines are met. Exceeding customer expectations of quality and service are what Display Power is all about”.

I believe the success of Display Power is due to this attitude. We constantly strive to make our customers’ lives that little bit easier by being cooperative and flexible in meeting their needs. Also, the broad technical background of both management and staff really helps.

Our greatest challenge, like many businesses, is getting the most productivity out of an eight (or twelve!) hour day and consistently meeting ever increasing tighter deadlines.

Initially our  focus  was on display printing, progressing to a fully fledged digital printing and finishing company with a full range of wide format print and signage technologies.  Experiencing steady growth Display Power found it necessary to acquire a larger facility in 2004.

Today  our business focus is on four main segments. Retail display; trade show and exhibition displays;  general indoor and outdoor signage and digital vehicle wraps.

Last year we were invited into Asia  to manage the installation of  digital graphics  in Singapore and Hong Kong for a major European sports brand, successfully managing the logistics of local conditions. This project has heralded a stronger focus on the installation side of retail graphics and signage, and a closer association with the retail  industry.

As the pace of change in our industry accelerates , membership of  SGIAA has proved invaluable in assisting management to assess and position the company for the future..
SGIAA membership offers the tools and resources to tap into wide ranging international market and member experiences.

On a more personal note we are proud of  the achievements and contribution of our team and  appreciative of the long association and support of  many of our corporate clients,
who have  continually stretch our resourcefulness and challenged our innovation and diversity.

Looking to the future, it’s clear that electronics will play an increasing role in this fast changing industry . We are currently positioning Display Power to meet the challenges and opportunities of our digital age.

2008 SGIA Business Growth Survey Report Now Available
Fairfax, Virginia — Using the Internet and new ad campaigns, 40 percent of the SGIA Business Growth Survey respondents plan to grow their business by increasing internet sales in 2008. Other imagers will grow by hiring staff, adding equipment and new products.
Of the respondents, 49 percent of the imaging community are planning to offer new products this year. Garment decorators (25.7 percent), graphic producers (35 percent) and industrial-use printers (45.7 percent) say these new product lines are the reason they are purchasing equipment in 2008. Most imagers will pay cash for their purchases of equipment about one third of the time.
The report offers a complete analysis of actual equipment purchase plans as compared with planned purchase projections from 2006, 2007 and 2008 broken down by industry sector: Graphic Producers, Garment Decorators, Industrial-Use Printers and Suppliers/Distributors.
To see the most-purchased equipment in each sector, members can access the complete survey report free of charge, online at SGIA.org, Keyword: Surveys. The summary also is online at SGIA.org and available to all interested parties.
“Almost half of imagers reported that finding new customers is difficult,” said SGIA’s Business Information Associate Katy Lellelid. “But most are overcoming this challenge by launching new marketing and advertising campaigns because they see the need to expand to new markets to stay profitable.”
The Business Growth Survey ran from mid-March to mid-April and collected information about sales per employee.
Other survey reports posted online include the 2008 Financial Outlook Report, 2007 Safety Inititives Survey, and 2007 Wage & Salary Survey. For more information visit SGIA.org, Keyword: Surveys.

What REACH means for EU importers
If you import any goods into the EU then REACH could affect you. This leaflet gives basic information to help you understand what REACH is, what you might need to do and where to find more information.

What is REACH?
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is the new system for controlling chemicals in Europe.
It became law in the UK on 1 June 2007. You need to understand the ways it might affect you as an importer.

What chemicals are covered by REACH?
From 2008, chemicals imported into Europe in amounts at 1 tonne per year or more will need to be registered with a new European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki. Chemicals in these amounts, imported in mixtures and in some cases in articles, may also need to be registered.
There are a few exceptions including radioactive substances, those in customs for onwards export outside the EU, in transit and waste (as defined in EU Directives). Some chemicals, eg human and veterinary medicines, food and food additives, intermediates have reduced requirements and some will be treated as if they are already registered. More information on what is covered can be found at the UK REACH Competent Authority website www.hse.gov.uk/reach.

FESPA DIGITAL PRINTING EUROPE ATTRACTS STRONG ASIA-PACIFIC AUDIENCE
Show drives further exhibitor bookings for FESPA World Expo Asia-Pacific 2008

FESPA’s second Digital Printing Europe exhibition, which took place from 1st to 3rd April 2008 at Geneva’s Palexpo exhibition centre, attracted an increasingly diverse international audience, including a significant number of screen and digital wide format printers from Asia-Pacific, looking to explore the latest innovations in the sector.

Overall the show attracted similar visitor numbers to the inaugural event in 2006, with 12817 visits recorded over the three days comprising guests from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Americas.  Excellent attendance levels were recorded for Asia-Pacific with nearly 150 printers from the region visiting the show, representing 15 individual countries. Marcus Timson, FESPA Event Director for Asia-Pacific comments: “We are delighted with the number of individuals from Asia-Pacific that attended our digital show. This illustrates the strong interest among the region’s print community to explore the latest industry developments and innovations in the wide format sector, and their confidence in FESPA’s ability to deliver a worthwhile, content-rich event experience.”

Greg Stone of GJS Machinery Pty Ltd comments: “As an Australian distributor of dye sublimation equipment and consumables, it is important to attend international exhibitions to monitor future developments in the industry. FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008 also gave me the opportunity to build stronger relationships with our current suppliers and meet prospective suppliers in person. This exhibition was my first FESPA event and it exceeded all my expectations in terms of size and diversity of products and services on show. I am looking forward to FESPA World Expo Asia-Pacific in Bangkok later this year.”

Several exhibitors in Geneva also confirmed their interest in the emerging Asia-Pacific markets, by booking their stands at FESPA World Expo Asia-Pacific 2008. With more than six months to go before the event, key industry players including Epson, Konica Minolta, NAZDAR, Bordeaux and GCC have also booked their places, impressed with the quality of FESPA’s digital events, FESPA’s professionalism, industry expertise and strong brand.

Exhibitors at FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008 expressed their collective satisfaction with the international spectrum of visitors, and their decision-making authority.  Many vendors commented that the majority of discussions were with someone with a genuine ability to make or influence a major purchasing decision.  This is borne out by the visitor data, which indicates that over 40% of individual visitors to the show were owners or general managers of their businesses.

Timson continues: “Research that we conducted in the Asia-Pacific region, along with feedback from Asia-Pacific visitors at FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2008, further reaffirms the clear need for a high-calibre, pan-regional screen and wide-format printing event dedicated to the unique interests of the Asian-Pacific printing community. Our launch event in the region, FESPA World Expo Asia-Pacific (28th – 30th November) in Bangkok, will aim to inspire printers and help them acquire the know-how to effectively grow their businesses and maximise profitability.”

FESPA ACQUIRES iMAGEWORLD MEXICO EVENT FROM ST MEDIA GROUP
FESPA has acquired all rights to the imageWorld event (Centro Banamex, Mexico City, 21-23 August 2008) from ST Media Group International, with the aim of expanding the event under a new brand – FESPA Mexico World Expo.

ImageWorld has established itself over the past decade as Mexico’s leading trade show for the sign making, screenprinting and digital imaging industries. FESPA assumes complete responsibility for all sales, marketing and operations of the event with immediate effect, though ST Media will remain involved with the show in a consultative capacity over a five-year period.

The show, which will run to its original schedule in August under the new FESPA Mexico World Expo brand, already has 3100sqm of allocated space, including prominent industry brands such as Canon, EFI VUTEk, Fujifilm Sericol, Gandi Innovations and HP.  FESPA’s first move as the event’s new owner has been to expand the available floor space by 25% to accommodate demand from first-time exhibitors, and to reinforce its investment in promotional activity to attract the highest calibre audience of decision makers to the event.

FESPA managing director Frazer Chesterman explains, ‘In recent years, in response to clear demand from the marketplace, FESPA has demonstrated a commitment to expanding our event portfolio into strong emerging markets. These include, for example, the successful launches of FESPA India and its Digital spin-off, and the forthcoming FESPA Asia-Pacific event.’

‘Like these markets, demand for wide format print is booming in Mexico. The economic and political landscape is more stable than ever, and the time is right for FESPA to branch out into the region. ImageWorld has established itself as a successful forum for the Mexican imaging market. Now, our ambition is to expand the show, appealing to a broader community of screen printers, signmakers and digital print service providers, as well as textile and garment manufacturers in Mexico and the wider Latin American market.’

FESPA Mexico World Expo will be co-ordinated by FESPA event manager Michael Ryan, who has been pivotal to the growth of FESPA’s shows, both in Europe and in other emerging markets such as India.   As part of FESPA’s in-house events team, Ryan has contributed to the growth of the FESPA exhibitions, including a sell-out FESPA Digital show in Europe, and brought two successive Indian events to fruition. The last international FESPA event in Berlin in June 2007 attracted a record-breaking 24,232 visitors, including 300 from Latin America.

Ryan, a Spanish speaker, will be supported locally by Humberto Garcia, ST Media’s local representative for the show, who will continue to handle Latin American advertising sales for Signs of the Times and Screen Printing en español, the region’s leading publication for the signage and graphics industries. Michael and Humberto will both have the support of FESPA’s exhibition organising team, based in the UK. FESPA board member Ricardo Rodriguez Delgado will take on an ambassadorial role for FESPA in the region, with a focus on cultivating relationships with the printing community in the region, including trade bodies, vendors, distributors and service providers. A former president of FESPA, Ricardo has been closely involved with the organisation and its Iberian associations for many years.

‘We believe FESPA brings a number of critical strengths to this show that will enable it to grow significantly in the future under its new identity,’ said Tedd Swormstedt, president of ST Media Group International. ‘FESPA is very well positioned to build the international representation at the show and expand the breadth of imaging technologies displayed there. We are very pleased to be working with them in our continuing efforts to provide information to Latin American signage and imaging professionals, a market we have served for over 15 years.’

Revenues from FESPA events are reinvested in a dynamic programme of educational and training initiatives, seminars, conferences, industry summits and publications to support screen and digital print service providers. These are delivered through FESPA’s network of member associations and associate members, which currently covers 34 individual countries.

Frazer Chesterman concludes, ‘Feedback from vendors and print service providers tells us that there is a need for a world-class event in Latin America which brings together global brands and local distributors, while providing a showcase for innovation and a forum for learning and knowledge sharing. We look forward to working with ST Media and its titles, as well as other key industry publishers in the region to develop and deliver a stronger and expanded FESPA Mexico World Expo event. Beyond that, we see FESPA playing a key role in the positive development of this sector in Mexico and more widely in Latin America for many years to come.’
